DESCRIPTION:

Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning. Some of them even use very small font size of 6 or less to increase their profit margin. Most of them use low-quality papers & binding. Then the epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles' looming death and the sack of Troy, prefigured and alluded to more and more vividly, so that when it reaches an end, the poem has told a more or less complete tale of the Trojan War.. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. What emerges is a vivid, lively rendition of one of the world's great stories of men and war. To this end, he has streamlined the poem, removing many of the stock repetitions such as the infamous "rosy-fingered dawn," or rewriting them in ways dependent on their context. The Trojan Horse, Achilles' heel, the Sirens' call, Scylla and Charybdis--all have entered popular mythology, becoming metaphors for the less heroic situations we face in our own lives. Ever since these oral poems were committed to paper (probably in the 8th century B.C.E.), people have been translating them. It might well outrage the purists, but for those who remember their musty high-school reading of Homer's great epic with a barely suppressed yawn, Lombardo's energetic translation is just the version to change their minds. The version of Iliad translated by Stanley Lombardo is a brave departure from previous translations; Lombardo attempts t

Jill Clardy said Lattimore's translation of The Odyssey (Amazon combines reviews for ALL translations). I just completed a Continuing Studies course on The Odyssey at Stanford University conducted by the venerable Dr. Marsh McCall who actually made it a fun and fascinating class. During the class, we read from two of the most modern translations, this one from Lattmore as well as Robert Fagles' more recent translation. I found myself reading with both books open to the same chapter, comparing the language and meaning. Lattimore chose to retain the original verse count of the Ancient Greek text, which tended to cause some rather odd and strained English constructions at times. Though the meaning was similar and neit. I got the T.E. Lawrence translation -- it's prose!! This is absurd. Amazon must stop this nutty practice of selling any old Odyssey and combining the descriptions. I am trying to find a specific translation and thought I had. You can't just call it one thing and deliver another. It's like sending a different book. It IS sending a different book! We need to take action on this beyond the review section.
