Profusely illustrated, this astonishing book explores Worth’s success in the realm of haute couture after 1890.   Legendary British-born designer Charles Frederick Worth (18251895), with enormous talent for design and promotion, built his fashion house into an empire during the last quarter of the 19th centurythe first business of its kind with global reach. Images and text tell the intriguing story of these creations, providing historical context and describing Worth’s international clientele of elegant women of wealth and power.. His company, through his heirs, endured until 1952, when his great-grandson retired. Hundreds of photographs selected from the V&A’s unique archive of more than 7,000 official house records capture the Worth style and offer valuable insights into the daily routine at Maison Worth in Paris

A glimse into the first great fashion house Read this book and be amazed that these images were stored away on shelf space at the V & A. The text is delightful, the images are good reproductions of the black and white photos of the collection. What would make this a better study for the fashion historian is detailed color images of Worth garments. There is inspiration here, no doubt, but these documents should be married to garments in the museum collection to bring the works to life.. "Read this book and be amazed that these images were stored away on shelf space at the V & A" according to Georgia Sipes. Just recieved this book ,I have waited for this. I can tell you that the photos are in black and white which is alright ,sometimes they show more detail. A great reference book. Have'nt had a chance to read the whole book but looks good. There are so few books on Worth so am delighted with this one. I feel fashion would not be what it is today if it wern't for Worth. I would recommend this book to anyone who sews and needs inspiration for growns.
