Clearly written and illustrated, it is well indexed and has copious chapter end notes. In addition, there is a glossary of instrument makers.. When looking for a topic for your dissertation you generally want to choose not only something that is very interesting to you, but needed for the subject area world you are contributing to. This book is the perfect example of why I did not choose to do a dissertation on the history of the clarinet.
