What a wonderful way to see what isn't here any more Peppermint Patti Interesting book. I grew up in Pittsburgh and have always been intrigued by the mansions that still remain. What a wonderful way to see what isn't here any more. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in Pittsburgh.. A Great Gift Gave Pittsburgh's Mansions to my brother as a Christmas gift. He unwrapped the package and immediately started to read it, ignoring the rest of his gifts. So many of the beautiful old homes featured in the book we knew in our childhood, but they are now gone, victims of progress. He spent an hour going through the book, reminiscing, and mourning the demise of architectural gems. Two days later, he was still talking about the book, so I would say it merits five. Lora said Five Stars. Very interesting to read and look at the wonderful pictures, a keepsake

Wealthy enclaves sprang up in the city’s East End, across the river in neighboring Allegheny City, and into the countryside. In the 19th century, the positioning of Pittsburgh as a major manufacturing center and the subsequent rise of the area’s steel industry created a wave of prosperity that prompted the beneficiaries of that wealth to construct extravagant residences. Businessmen such as H.J. Firms such as Alden & Harlow, Janssen & Abbott, and Rutan & Russell left their marks on the city’s landscape, often contributing iconic public buildings as well as expansive private homes. Heinz, Henry Clay Frick, and members of the Mellon family commissioned elaborate homes from the preeminent architects of their day. Pittsburgh’s Mansions explores the stately homes of the area’s prominent residents from the 1830s through the 1920s
