An engrossing glimpse into the lives of women prisoners This engrossing narrative is a collection of interviews with women who have been in the prison system in this country in a number of different state prisons. Each story is its own unique tragedy but several things are common to all: the mindless brutality of our prison system and the poverty and dysfunctional lives these women come from. Most were sexually and physically abused as children often with drug addicted parents. There was no one to protect them from. The use of pseudonyms and the changing of other case details detract somewhat from the narrative, though, since sometimes the facts as stated clearly conflict with the actual facts of the case. I think the authors changed names and details in order to protect the women, some of whom are out of prison now, but the end result is that those familiar with the actual cases may have some trouble believing any of the narrat.
