"Bizarre, but Brilliant" according to rinab. I hope there is a prequel to this book. I want to know more about the Company and its motives.Overall, I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves reading books about monsters and unique creatures. Also, the relationship that developed between Rachel and Borne was beautiful. I found myself siding with Borne throughout the book even though I shouldn't have. I hope Vandameer's other books are . "OK beach read." according to tempusfugit. First half was great. Second half kinda petered out. It felt as if the author was tired of writing and just wanted to get it done.. "This May Be Our Futurelet's hope not" according to Cathy McAuliffe. I had heard the author discussing the book on NPR, and I ordered it that day (Kindle) because I was so intrigued. Even after having heard the discussion, though, I was caught off-guard by the characters, the setting, and the plot! What a world, what a world, to quote the Wicked Witch of the West. It was really disconcerting to think that we might be headed in this direction if things continue as

One day, Rachel finds Borne during a scavenging mission and takes him home. She cannot help herself. Borne, learning to speak, learning about the world, is fun to be with, and in a world so broken that innocence is a precious thing. Borne reminds Rachel of the marine life from the island nation of her birth, now lost to rising seas. Rachel ekes out an existence in the shelter of a run-down sanctuary she shares with her partner, Wick, who deals his own homegrown psychoactive biotech. In the aftermath, nothing may ever be the same.. Borne as salvage is little more than a green lump - plant or animal? - but exudes a strange charisma. She begins to feel a protectiveness she can ill afford. Yet, against her instincts - and definitely against Wick's wishes - Rachel keeps Borne. There is an attachment she resents: in this world any weakness can kill you. What Borne will lay bare to Rachel as he changes is how precarious her existence has been, and how dependent on subterfuge and secrets. The city is dangerous, littered with discarded experiments from the Company - a biotech firm now derelict - and punished by the unpredictable predations of a giant bear. For Borne makes Rachel see beauty in the desolation around her. "He was born, but I had borne him."
