Vladimir Nabokov called Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina "one of the greatest love stories in world literature." Set in imperial Russia, Anna Karenina is a rich and complex meditation on passionate love and disastrous infidelity.Married to a powerful government minister, Anna Karenina is a beautiful woman who falls deeply in love with a wealthy army officer, the elegant Count Vronsky. Desperate to find truth and meaning in her life, she rashly defies the conventions of Russian society and leaves her husband and son to live with her lover. The use of descriptives to describe scenery, culture, and classism was very enlightening of the time period of Russia conveyed in this book. The philosophical debates among characters such as Levin became long suffering. The story of Anna Karenina herself was very sad as she made one bad decision after another and then had to live with her mistakes. I did not like Anna at a. "Slow paced life changer." according to Ryan. This book is in the top 5 books I've ever read. Tolstoy takes a complex theme, love, and teases it out using two different characters to embody two different views on love. Then he takes those views to their fruition. Anna Karenina is one perspective on love, and Nikolai Levin is another. They both have obstacles that they overcome, and both have a surprising ending. I loved it. I'll read and reread
