DESCRIPTION:

"A truly Lovecraftian gothic-horror masterpiece" according to Nick (Fresh Fiction). House on the Borderland by William Hope Hogson was actually recommended to me by the author Brian Keene. Forgive me for name-dropping but we got into a conversation on his blog not too long ago and Brian told me that this was the book that ultimately got him interested in wanting to be a horror writer. With a recommendation like that, how could I not read it right? The thing about this book that you also need to know going in is that it was written over 100 years ago (1908 to be specific). So the writing is very archaic and "old-english" if you will. This takes a bit of getting used to when you first immerse . "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” I'm a pretty big horror fan. I graduated from Christopher Pike novels to Stephen King before I hit my teens. Naturally, I'm pretty familiar with the works of H.P. Lovecraft. So when I came across an author who Lovecraft named as a major influence on his work, I naturally had to give it a read. The similarities are apparent from page one. It has many of the ingredients of classic Lovecraft: cosmic horror, strange locals, unnamed horrors. It's a must read for anyone who is a fan of Horror or just H.P. Lovecraft. The story begins with two English gentlemen named Tonnison and Berreggnog who are taking a fishing tr. ""Cosmic Horror Tale"" according to Doctor Moss. The back cover of this book describes it as "a classic tale of cosmic horror." That is what I especially like about Hodgson's story. On one hand, it's the story of a person who is drawn by his curiosity to explore what turns out to be an almost unintelligible threat -- his house sits over a huge pit, inhabited by menacing "swine creatures" from who-knows-where with who-knows-what purposes. But on the other, that pit, the creatures, and what happens when the narrator follows his curiosity, raise the story to that "cosmic" level, where the fate of the earth, and good and evil play out.Hodgson is very good at in

In the ruins they discover an old manuscript that seems to suggest the house was once involved in something super natural, and horrific.. While on a fishing trip two men discover the ruins of an old house perched on the very edge of a cliff
