Not one of Wharton's best efforts. Though I typically love Edith Whartons' writing, I did not care for this novella at all, I believe this is an early work. It was extremely wordy and laborious to read, not very interesting, to me at least. Her later works are quite well written and engaging, but I found this one to be annoying.. Old book holds up well I read this book as part of my research on the time when this was published. Frankly, I thought it would probably be boring, but the plot raised multiple issues to create tension and it held my interest. I did not expect the serious ethical questions involved in the plot.
