Exceptional Kupciher This is the first episode of the worldwide highly successful TV series "Prime Suspect," that propelled Helen Mirren into superstardom as DCI Jane Tennison. If I enjoyed the TV series (watched all of it) because it was entirely different than American cop shows, I enjoyed the book even more. I usually don't read many female whodunit/mystery writers but Lynda La Plante is an exception, right there with P.D. James and Faye Kellerman's Decker Series. The plot i. Great Writing I'm kind of a snob where crime writing is concerned, if it's not excellent I put the book down. Though I have watched the BBC TV Series on PBS for years I have never read the books. I love Ms. La Plante's writing. It is spare but true. Sometimes while reading the dialog I realize it was lifted directly to the screen. I read this book in one sitting, couldn't put it down except to make lunch and dinner. Even though I knew the outcome from the series, I was s. M. Daly said Complex mystery with complex characters. If the rest of the books in this London police procedural are as good as this first one, I think I have a new favorite. Jane Tennison is a woman in a male realm of London police detectives. Though very competent, the powers that be are reluctant to put her in charge of a major case, and the men in he squad are equally against being bossed by a woman. When she is the only one available for a high profile case, no one, except herself, wants to see her succeed

She had a prime suspect, and she needed to make the charges against him stick. But Jane Tennison was determined to catch the madman stalking women in London's street shadows. Being so thorough, so good at the details, made Jane a top investigator; being a woman made the boys in the squadron want to see her fall on her face. She also needed to keep her own secret in check: she couldn't let anyone see that she was falling apart inside, as her obsession with cracking this case and breaking out from under the heel of the station house boy's club took over
