This is the first of the series. I have now read The Curse of the Pharaohs and The Mummy Case. The violence is truly negligible, but after all, they are murder mysteries. The sexual content is referred too charmingly. The Emerson family and their acquaintances are a bit off kilter, but so likable.Great reading for anyone who is tired of all the graphic descriptions in books so many writers feel they need to sell books.I intend to read Elizabeth Peters' other nov. Still My All-Time Favorite Series of Books! I have read and re-read this entire series many times. This time around I get to share the story of Amelia and Emerson with my kids as our family read-aloud choice. The result? They LOVE the characters as much as I do! They cheered, laughed aloud and have even begun to incorporate 'Peabody-isms' into conversation.We are a homeschool family and appreciate books that start conversations on a variety of topics, even for books we choose mostly for fun. This book started conversations on morality, Middle Eastern culture, development of women's rights, Muslim religion, British interests in Egypt, poverty, to name a fe. Strong personalities and nice look at early Egyptology with a reasonable mystery with the mummy. Amelia Peabody is a self possessed woman with independent means and a sharp mind. Upon the death of her father she decides to travel to all the places that he had studied and finds an English woman in distress in Rome. Evelyn is quickly adopted as traveling companion and the two set off for Egypt. Evelyn having been recently abandoned by an unscrupulous tutor she intended to elope with. The two women find themselves at a dig at Amarna with two archaeologist brothers and a mummy of the walking variety. Strong personalities and nice look at early Egyptology with a reasonable mystery with the mummy.
