Extraordinary Botanical Painting Techniques!!! Jon Linden Billy Showell had an eye for both color (in its smallest gradations) and composition. This book in particular shows her incredibly sharp talents. This book is very much a flower painting techniques book. While some 24 pages of basics about painting watercolor 'portraits' of flowers, the majority of the book is made up with step-by-step painting instructions on 40 specific and oft represented wild growing flowers. They include the following flowers: 1) Anemone 2) Camellia 3) Clematis 4) Freesia 5) Blue & Pink Hydrangea 6) Sweet Pea 7) Honeysuckle 8) Magnolia 9) Hybrid Tea Rose ("Rosa") 10) WisteriaA. Incredible instruction I purchased this book not knowing that all I need was just this book to improve my techniques. The details and explanation of how to paint in watercolor is stunning.Step by step details,as well as learning about the flower itself is something that I really was very much impressed with. The artist knows what they are doing and in simple details share their knowledge with you.If you are an artist and wish to paint flowers, this is the ONLY book that is worth purchasing. There are so many on the market, this book surpasses everything else.I recommended this book for my students to purchase.. There are better Billy Showell books Billy Showell is an amazingly talented artist and I learned al ot following the tutorials in this book. I wish I had chosen another of her titles, however, as the reach required to get a flower for every letter of the alphabet results in my being totally uninterested in more than half the examples. I also found the colors to be poorly replicated in the book. There was simply no way to replicate the swatches and if you did you would not get the same flowers as in the illustrations. Not sure if this is the result of the printing process or ? It did force me to learn much more about mixing and blendi

Billy Showell is an artist and art instructor. She is the author of "Watercolour Flower Portraits" and "Watercolour Fruit & Vegetable Portraits."

Ms Showell's earlier book on Watercolor Fruit and Vegetable Portraits (also reviewed on this site) showed how lovely even the humble spud could look when transformed into the sort of painting you could encounter in a priceless 18th century book. The beauty of working this way is that it allows the artist to become a participant in the painting rather than simply a follower of instruction, and once confident that your rose or tulip you've painted following her advice is competent you will feel encouraged to do it again with one from the garden or supermarket with new colours and shape
