DESCRIPTION:
"An important work for Wagnerites and musical scholars."Choice There had long been a need for a modern English translation of Wagner’s Ringa version that would be reliable and readable yet at the same time be a true reflection of the literary quality of the German libretto. 16 black-and-white illustrations. The translation is accompanied by Stewart Spencer’s introductory essay on the libretto and a series of specially commissioned texts by Barry Millington, Roger Hollinrake, Elizabeth Magee, and Warren Darcy that discuss the cycle’s musical structure, philosophical implications, medieval sources, and Wagner’s own changing attitude to its meaning. Fine translation Essays were disappointing, but leitmotif list is useful and translation is excellent.. Alles I honestly don't know where else one would five such a handy and complete translated libretto of such a massive operatic corpus. Of course, you can enjoy the opera without a libretto, especially now with the hand above stage subtitles, but I have found a little study with this text has helped me enormously in connecting word to music. Definitely recommend for anyone.. "A must for any lover of Wagner's operas!" according to DavidJB. Thorough and well-organized book. Essential for any Wagner- related library.
