More beautiful than Philip P. Chandler The text is excellent, of course, as one would expect from an Arden Shakespeare edition. The footnotes are helpful, but so copious as to be distracting, especially for someone relatively new to Shakespeare. (For such a one, the Folger Shakespeare is the better choice.) It is not obvious what advantage the Third Series of the Arden Shakespeares has over the Second. Indeed, I doubt that the following howler (Footnote to line 5.1.222, in pertinent part) would have appeared in the notes to a play in the Second Series: "Hermione was more beautiful than her,. Fantastically fantastic!! This is one of Shakespeare's most enigmatic and complex plays and is an overall great read!! This resists categorization as either a comedy and instead is considered to be a romance, having been written towards the end of Shakespeare's life. It's as fantastical as "The Tempest," as bitter as "King Lear" and as gratifying as "Much Ado About Nothing" all at once. It includes the usual Shakespearian staples of kings and cuckoldry but also includes some unexpected elements such as an oracle from Apollo, the appearance of Time as a character and even a bear. The first time I ever saw its title, I was in High School, looking at the names of all the plays Shakespeare ever wrote. We all know about his overly famous plays, like Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, but what about The Winter's Tale? I was intrigued by the title at the time, and the fact that I'd never heard of it before (and with a brother heavily into Shakespeare and acting, that was unusual).
