Jesus becomes a philosopher-revolutionary and Christ is the politically savvy brother, who ultimately proves naïve. Pullman's gospel version reveals how the politics and structure of the institutional church were plotted by power-hungry men, who used the renown of Jesus and his well-meaning, devoted brother Christ as pawns in their corrupt game-a critique that will be familiar to readers of His Dark Materials. This is a tale of (almost comedic) mistaken identity and good intentions gone horribly awry. From Publishers Weekly This gospel retelling is relatively faithful in style, time line, and events to the four canonical gospels-though Pullman

Upon its hardcover publication, renowned author Philip Pullman’s The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ provoked heated debates and stirred a frenzy of controversy throughout the clerical and literary worlds alike with its bold retelling of the life of Jesus Christ. In this remarkable piece of fiction, famously atheistic author Philip Pullman challenges the events of the Gospels and puts forward his own compelling and plausible version of the life of Jesus. Written with unstinting authority, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ is a pithy, erudite, subtle, and powerful book by a beloved author, a text to be read and reread, studied and unpacked, much like the Good Book itself.

The plot stays close enough to the traditional biblical tales that it takes relatively small changes . "Odd but worthwhile" according to Kelly. The only other Philip Pullman stories I've read are His Dark Materials, which I completely loved. This is entirely different in how it is written and the type of story being told. I found the most interesting part of the story the epilogue where Pullman discusses his own meaning behind the text and the background of why he wrote this. It's a strange read but offers a fascinating, very different take on the Gospels. It's also a very quick re. "Can be confusing" according to SAC. I am a big fan of Philip Pullman's writing. He he easy to read, clear, concise, and just generally a very talented writer. Pullman maps out many of the popular biblical stories as having plausible non-miracle explanations to how they may have come about as Jesus and Christ move through their lives. His title however is confusing to me, "The Good Man Jesus and Scoundrel Christ". In this story it is Jesus who causes trouble as a youth, who de
