A lovely story of love and family, wrapped in psychic packaging Dr. J Gregory's novel, Spoonbenders, wound up on my "must buy" list this spring and I have no idea why. I'm a bit of a raccoon when it comes to choosing books: I read many, many reviews and previews and just gather them up like so many shiny things. Anyway, by the time Spoonbenders arrived in my kindle on the 4th of July, I had forgotten all about it. Happily for me, I was soon between books and so I opened this book upand fell in love.This is a brilliant little gem of a story. There's a lot going on here, with psychics and mobsters and family dysfunction- but . Barry Melius said Perhaps Daryl Gregory's best work to date. The Amazing Telemachus Family has a disastrous debut on TV and decides to retire and try their hand at being normal with limited success. Caught between the Mob and the CIA things stay busy. Chaos is the new normal. It starts as a story of not particularly appealing people going about their lives as their shortcomings are revealed. By a third of the way in I was hooked as the author slowly brought them back into focus as decent folks doing their best to keep things from spiraling out of control. It finishes with a bang but whether sad or inspiring kept me. Wonderful novel Interesting and entertaining. The characters were so likable and real. Humor along with drama mixed well.
