DESCRIPTION:

His life and art have been thoroughly examined, analyzed, and interpreted, in many ways. The interviews conducted by Colin Eatock underscore this phenomenon, and through them he assesses Gould's rightful place in the bigger picture of Canada's cultural heritage.. (Amadeus). Three decades after Gould's passing at the age of 50, the world's fascination with this remarkable Canadian pianist and public intellectual remains undiminished. Indeed, in the years since his sudden death, on October 4, 1982, he has been the subject of countless books, articles, documentaries, and other presentations. Among the remarkable attractions to Glenn Gould is that he holds an almost mythical status in the zeitgeist of Canadian arts and letters, somewhat like Tom Thomson and Grey Owl, and that he captures the imaginations of all who encounter his music and life story

This book in no way competes with or replaces Kevin Bazzana's biography, which is the sine qua non. What I found is that it let me relive some of the better-known and sometimes not-so-well-known facets of Glenn Gould's personal. enlightening and resonant MR CHARLES POPE JR excellent and enlightening, and particularly resonant for me since I'm well acquainted with several of the people interviewed, and once interviewed Gould, myself.

While we might not be too surprised acquainted as we are with the magnitude of Gould s talent to read that he could spontaneously transcribe Wagner s Tristan und Isolde at the piano, it is interesting to learn (again, from Roberts) that he could do the same with William Walton s Troilus and Cressida, an opera he had acquainted himself with by looking over the score on a flight from London. Even those who suppose themselves tolerably well briefed on the pianist and his art might encounter some revelations. Pianist/broadcaster Stuart Hamilton and composer John Beckwith, both fellow students at what is now the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, concur that Gould inherited much from his teacher Alberto Guerrero, including the trademark slouch at the piano and flat-fingere

As well, he holds masters degrees in music composition (U of T) and music criticism (McMaster University), and a bachelor of music degree (University of Western Ontario). Before he became a freelance writer, he worked for ten years within the administration of Toronto's Canadian Opera Company, as an editor, publicist and fundraiser. A CD wholly devoted to his music, Colin Eatock: Chamber Music, is a 2012 release of the Canadian Music Centre's record label, Centrediscs. Colin Eatock is a compos
