From 1651 to 1728 John Playford, his son Henry, and John Young published multiple editions of the Dancing Master—collections of dance instructions and musical accompaniment. Suitable for use in teaching and performance, many of these tunes are still played by musicians today both for pleasure and dance accompaniment.. Over 500 distinct tunes were printed in these volumes and they give us one of the best pictures of English popular dance music in the 17th and early 18th centuries. "Poorly notated, virtually useless for TAB-only players." according to Kevin Holmes. The book would be just OK if the TAB staffs were notated correctly, which they are not; only the fret numbers are shown on the staff lines, while the the rhythm indications (the note heads and stems) are missing, leaving the reader/player to refer to the accompanying standard notation to determine the rhythm, making the TAB staff superfluous to anyone who can read standard notation, and useless to anyone who reads only TAB n
